Peter Falconio and girlfriend Joanne Lees were attacked while travelling across Australia in 2001
Police are reviewing the fresh claims in a letter allegedly from an Australian expat who now lives in London.
Mr Falconio, 28, from Hepworth, West Yorks, was presumed dead after he disappeared in July 2001 while travelling with girlfriend Joanne Lees.
His body has never been found despite extensive searches.
According to an anonymous letter Mr Falconio's body was cut into pieces and buried in the outback
In 2005, Australian mechanic Bradley John Murdoch was convicted of murder and of assaulting Ms Lees and sentenced to life in prison.
The letter – one of many received by police over the years – was sent to a local newspaper in Australia.
It allegedly claims that Mr Falconio’s remains were cut up by a criminal associate of Murdoch and put in bags before being partially dissolved in acid and buried in a remote area.
