A MAJOR in the Russian army has been killed during an attack on a Syrian army garrison by terrorists.
Major Sergei Bordov died in the attack as he bravely helped stop the terrorists from entering the military base.
A statement issued by the Russian Defence Ministry read: "In Syria, Russian military adviser Major Sergei Bordov was killed as a result of a militant attack. The serviceman was a member of a unit training Syrian troops.”

It added: "During the fight, the officer sustained critical wounds. Major Sergei Bodrov was granted a state decoration posthumously,"
Vyacheslav Pavlyuchenko, who has served with Maj Bordov, said: "They were caught in shell fire. Two of our Russian servicemen and two Syrian soldiers died.”
Maj Bordov is one of the highest-ranking Russian officers to be killed in Syria.

Mr Pavlyuchenko said Bordov commanded a reconnaissance company two years ago but he did not know the major's current role in the Syria operation.
Bordov's body was expected to be delivered to his military unit in the Crimean town of Sebastopol on Friday and his burial should take place in his hometown of Simferopol on Saturday, Pavlyuchenko and the source close to the fleet said.
On June 16, Russian Sergeant Andrei Timoshenkov died in hospital a day after he had entered into a battle against suicide bombers while guarding a humanitarian aid distribution point in Homs province. The soldier opened fire on one of three vehicles filled with explosives and stopped it, receiving lethal injuries in an explosion.

Russia has backed the Syrian president Bashir al-Assad and joined in with military action since September 30, 2015.
The defence ministry said about 30 Russian servicemen have been killed since the start of the Kremlin's operation in the Middle East country.
