The explosion, a suspected gas leak, occurred on Friday afternoon in the suburb of Boulogne Billancourt to the south west of Paris.
At least five people were injured, two seriously, according to reports.
Eyewitnesses took photos and videos from the scene showing that the blast had ripped through the second or third floor of the building.
The force was so strong that it blew the street-facing walls off.
Eyewitnesses told police that the explosion was so strong that the ground was shaking and huge plumes of smoke billowed into the air.

The explosion was so ferocious that one flat was left with a gaping hole in the front of it.
Furniture, including a chair and a chest of drawers can be seen hanging out of the front of the building as smoke rises.
