GETTY

Theresa May wore a two-piece suit by British designer Amanda Wakeley for the visit with Donald Trump

The stylish two-piece suit by British designer Amanda Wakeley that Theresa May had picked for her first White House visit, in Republican red, appeared to perfectly match the President's bold crimson tie.

As the Prime Minister and Donald Trump trooped into the White House's palatial East Room for their first joint news conference, the packed crowd of media folk were knocked back by the warmth lowing out of this new diplomatic friendship.

Mrs May, always the epitome of calm control, has rarely looked so relaxed in public, while President Trump played the enthusiastic host.

He was playing up his British roots in the Hebrides within seconds of starting his welcoming address. “My mother was born in Scotland – Stornoway, which is serious Scotland,” he said.

As opposed to the more frivolous part presumably. Soon after he cracked a broad grin at the mention of his invitation to Buckingham Palace on a state visit.

The two leaders will spend about an hour in face-to-face talks in the Oval Office, where President Trump has restored a bust of Winston Churchill removed by predecessor Barack Obama.

President Trump Meets With British PM Theresa May At The White House

He insisted he had an instinct for instantly knowing whether he would develop a “great relationship” with anyone he met.

I’m not as brash as people say

President Trump

And he had clearly already made up his mind up that Mrs May was a diplomatic soulmate.

They were both “people people” he said in answer to a question about how such apparently contrasting personalities can get on. “I’m not as brash as people say,”he said.

There was little sign of the President’s famously abrasive tongue although a BBC reporter, showing distinctly more gumption than is sometimes seen by the American press corps, was swiped away for asking a gloomy question.

He answered that they were both 'people people' to a question about how the two got on

“This was your choice for a question?” he asked Mrs May.

“There goes that relationship.” As he stood beneath the White House chandeliers, the President swelled with pride at his first foray into world diplomacy.

Hardened members of the Washington reporters suggested Trump appeared at his least Trumpish, exuding gushing bonhomie in place of his usual scowl. He wanted “great relationships” with every country in the world, he said.

Mrs May insisted they shared the same desire to stick up for struggling families

The words “fantastic” and “wonderful” sprang easily to his lips in a show of positivity and he rejected the suggestion that many Brits might not be too keen on him.

Both leaders skirted around possible sticky issues such as torture and sanctions against Russia.

Mrs May insisted they shared the same desire to stick up for struggling families and the President nodded.

As they turned to leave, President Trump gently patted the Prime Minister’s shoulder.

This could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
