Spanish police have released footage of the desperate attempts to reach the shore to show what they are up against.

They foiled 500 attempts last month alone as migrants are the ports of Ceuta and Melilla become crowded with migrants trying to stow away in cargo ships and passenger ferries, trying desperately to seek into the EU.

Last month, officers launched a huge operation the Brigade of Response to Clandestine Immigration (BRIC) to find the migrants, mostly young men, who are taking risky routes into Europe.

The footage has been released just weeks after it emerged more than 10,000 migrants have gone missing since arriving in Austria.

A statement said: “(attempts) Mostly carried out by minors who tried to reach the Spanish coast as stowaways, using various methods to access the boats, some of them especially risky for their own life.

“Many of them were discovered by the agents hidden in the low or exterior voids of the trucks trucks ready to embark.

“Others were hidden between the scrap or other goods that are stored waiting to be loaded, a particularly dangerous procedure because when they do not know the precise moment in which the material will be loaded, they can remain even several days trapped between it.”

Staff have reported being confronted by the young men who have “pushed and threatened” them after running onto the ship.
