Xbox Scorpio could outperform the PS4
Project Scorpio could be the difference maker in the battle between PS4 and Xbox One.
That's the view of one NPD analyst, who believes that impressive Xbox Scorpio specs could see Microsoft outperform Sony when the holiday 2017 release date rolls around.
"I remain bullish on the Scorpio in the US market, particularly in the launch year," NPD's Mat Piscatella told GamesIndustry.biz.
"I think Scorpio has the potential to push Xbox One sales ahead of the PS4 in the US in 2017."
Piscatella admits that it's a niche market to target, but believes that this is key to Xbox Scorpio's long-term success.
"Adoption among the core gaming audience could be significant. And, while this is a niche audience to target, it’s the niche which is necessary to put the Scorpio on the path for longer term mass market adoption."
The comments come after Microsoft teamed up with Digital Foundry to showcase the impressive technology powering the Xbox Scorpio.

The CPU is said to be 30% faster than that of the original Xbox One, while the GPU is 4.6 times more powerful than its predecssor.
Interestingly, the 8GB of memory – which is up from the 5GB found in the original Xbox One – allows the console to process art assets, making it easier to run 4K resolution visuals at higher speeds.
It was tested with a ForzaTech demo, and was found to be more powerful than the PS4 Pro, which doesn't bode well for Sony.

Xbox Project Scorpio
In terms of price and release date, Microsoft is expected to reveal all at E3 in June.
The good news is that Project Scorpio is said to be running ahead of schedule, and could be released in as little as six months.
This would potentially give Xbox Scorpio an October release date, although nothing has been finalised.
In terms of a price, the report suggests that fans will need to pay a premium to purchase the device.
"As for cost, Microsoft told us absolutely nothing – but looking at what's in it, it ain't going to be cheap. Our guess, and it is just a guess, is $499, the same launch price as the original Xbox One,' reads the Eurogamer report.
