Xabi Alonso was as good as Steven Gerrard, claims Chris Kirkland
Xabi Alonso has today announced his retirement from football and confirmed he will be hanging up his boots at the end of the season.
The Bayern Munich man has decided to call time on his 18-year career in which he has represented Real Sociedad, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern.
And his former team-mate at Anfield Chris Kirkland was full of praise for the 35-year-old, claiming he was as good as club legend Steven Gerrard.

"He always wanted to get involved and be a part of the squad," Kirkland told Sky Sports.
"And his playing ability was right up there with Stevie [Gerrard].
"He is one of the best players I have ever played with."

In an official statement on Bayern Munich's website, Alonso said: "It was not an easy decision, but I think it's the right moment.
"I always wanted to stop earlier than too late. I feel good, but I think it's the right time."
Alonso had a highly-decorated career, winning two Champions League titles with Liverpool and Real Madrid as well as the 2010 World Cup with Spain.
