Windows 10 could be your most useful tool against ransomware

Windows 10 could be the most important tool to protect your home and office from ransomware.

Microsoft has released new research that shows how its software can be the first line of defence against terrifying viruses and malware that can shut down your computer.

The company has always maintained that its latest software build is the most secure version to date – and now it says it has the figures to prove this.

Microsoft has big plans for Windows 10 in 2017 – here's our run-down of what exactly you can expect.

Microsoft says that Windows 10 offers more in-depth security protection against the likes of ransomware and other damaging attacks which could take your device offline.

It says that its Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection (Windows Defender ATP) service is able to block a huge number of ransomware attacks before they even get a chance to launch.

The research shows that Windows Defender ATP was able to prevent a large number of infections of the Cerber ransomware family, which is one of the most damaging versions around today.

The service’s alerts were also able top detect automatic launches of Cerber, and how it operates to start encrypting files, all of which can be used to learn more about protecting users in the future.

Microsoft is urging business users to upgrade to Windows 10, as it has found the majority of its customers are still running Windows 7, which doesn’t offer the same scale of security protection.

Microsoft is equipping Windows 10 with even more security protection

Ransomware has grown to become one of the most serious security threats in recent times, as hackers search for higher and richer returns.

The attacks typically use infected files to infiltrate a victim’s device, and pretend that the user has engaged in illegal activity.

If the device is linked to a corporate or company network, this can allow the malware to spread incredibly quickly.

Windows 10 Creators Update will bring a new security hub

Microsoft is planning to reveal a range of updates to its security protection with the Windows 10 Creators Update.

Set for release in April, the upgrade will include an all-new protection hub that will allow PC users to keep on top of all the security needs.

Microsoft says that the new Windows Defender Security Centre will ensure that, "you are protected by default and continuously protected."

The new service will also make it easier to understand what security is in place on your device, and provide an easy way to monitor and adjust everything that protects your device.

The new hub will also be able to quickly and simply show a range of information on the health and performance of your device, letting you easily spot if there are any issues that may have been caused by a hack.

Thanks to its free upgrade scheme, Microsoft says that nearly 500 million devices are now running Windows 10 – giving it the record for the fastest adoption rate of any Microsoft operating system.

Figures released late last year showed that Windows 10 is now installed across 22.59 per cent of all PCs in use today.

However it is still lagging far behind the market leader, Windows 7, which has 48.38 per cent of the total, with Windows 8.1 also showing a 0.57 per cent gained in the last month.
