Clijsters was playing alongside Australian Rennae Stubbs in the women’s invitational doubles, a more informal competition run over the closing days of the Championships.
Facing Spaniard Conchita Martinez and American Andrea Jaeger, Clijsters was taking suggestions from the crowd about where she should serve.
“Inside or outside?” she asked.
One fan responded: “Body!”
Kim Clijsters forced the fan into an ill-fitting skirt and white top
Clijsters laughed and shouted: “Why don’t you go there?”
Martinez seemed to like the idea and offered her racket to the fan.
A gentleman of a portly stature, he clambered onto court before Clijsters realised he was in breach of strict all-white Wimbledon dress code.
The Belgian 34-year-old produced a spare skirt from her bag and found a white top for the bewildered fan to squeeze into.
When he eventually got himself into the suitable gear, Clijsters served straight at his body, which he admirably returned only for Stubbs to smash it back and win the point.
