Novak Djokovic retired from his quarter-final against Tomas Berdych with an elbow problem while Murray and Stan Wawrinka both went out under injury clouds.
The world No1 had been struggling with a sore hip even before the tournament started but blamed it for hindering his movement during a five-set defeat to Sam Querrey.

He also admitted that he could take a break from the game altogether, a move that would mirror Federer’s own.
The Swiss took six months off after his exit from Wimbledon last year to deal with a knee injury and returned revitalised, now having won two of the three majors in 2017.
But the 35-year-old also admitted his approach was not for everyone.
“He has a different practice regime than I have,” Federer said. “It doesn't mean he's practicing more or less. It's just different. He's had a different upbringing. Everything is different.

“It doesn't mean because I took a break that everybody should take that break.
“Some players just need to play.
“They need to play every other day, otherwise they feel like they completely lose touch with the racket and the ball, you know, the body goes all funny on them.
“I think it's only himself with his team who knows best.”

Murray himself said he would follow whatever medical advice he was offered, whether it was rest, different training or specialist rehabilitation.
And the British No1 also admitted it would need to be a long-term solution.
“I have no idea of exactly what that's going to be,” Murray said earlier this week.
“Just like I said, you know, before Wimbledon, it's a very short-term mindset.
“You're trying to get yourself in the best shape possible for this tournament, and I did that. I did the best that I could.”
