Why Philippe Coutinho’s new Liverpool contract may mean nothing – Jamie Carragher

That is the view of Reds legend Jamie Carragher.

Liverpool managed to tie their star playmaker down to a five-year contract this week.

With Philippe Coutinho now staying at Anfield until 2022, the club hopes to have warded off interest from Barcelona.

However, despite the Brazil international outlining his happiness on Merseyside working under Jurgen Klopp, Carragher feels it still might not be enough.

The former Liverpool defender was at the club when Luis Suarez was there, as the world-class striker showcased his talent.

But Barca were still able to take Liverpool’s best player, and player-turned-pundit Carragher says even without a release clause in Coutinho’s contract, the La Liga giants can still come calling.

“We've had plenty of players in the past Liverpool who have signed big contracts then moved on,” Carragher said on Sky Sports.

Philippe Coutinho couldn't break past Southampton last night as Liverpool suffered EFL Cup heartache

“Liverpool are no different to every other club in world football besides two. If Barcelona or Real Madrid come for one of your players and pay what you want, they're going, because 99 per cent of players want to play for those two clubs.

“If that happens, it means, if they're unbelievable for Liverpool, then you have to thank him, as we did with Luis Suarez.”

Coutinho was unable to celebrate his long-term commitment last night though and help Liverpool overturn their EFL Cup semi-final deficit against Southampton.

Claude Puel’s side won 1-0 again at Anfield to deny Coutinho and Klopp’s men a place at Wembley next month.
