Bookmakers William Hill have given the dancer odds of 4/6 after originally pricing him as an outsider at 16/1.
It was originally thought that Strictly professional Anton Du Beke might be about to fill the empty seat on the judging panel but now his odds have drifted out to 2/1 from 4/6.
“This is the sort of market where we might not see vast sums of money, but the interest we do see is generally well informed,” said William Hill spokesman Jon Ivan-Duke.
“Overwhelmingly, the support has been for Gary Edwards, who could be waltzing in to the judge’s hot seat.”
Here is everything you need to know about Gary Edwards
Gary was born in Romford in April 1966 and took up dancing at the age of seven.
He has known departing judge and fellow Essex man Len for most of his life.
Gary revealed back in 2015 that he was described as a “young Len” by someone very close to the 72-year-old ballroom veteran.

He describes himself as an “Essex boy who doesn’t take life too seriously”.
Gary’s Twitter handle is “ballroom giant” due to the fact he stands at 6’4” tall.
The name is also reflective of his dancing success- he holds more than 40 international titles in both Ballroom and Latin.

Gary currently appears on the American version of Strictly: It Takes Two, which is called Dancing With the Stars All Access.
Gary has taught some big names how to dance, including pop legend Michael Jackson.
The 50-year-old instructed Michael how to dance a cha cha, which he later said was a highlight of his career.
He revealed to Broadway Showbiz: "Michael was beyond incredible, a true legend, and an absolute gentleman. Needless to say, after [my] ‘teaching’ Michael the basic cha-cha, he was already putting his own twist on it!"
