Medici: Masters of Florence is the lavish new Netflix period drama
Will Medici: Masters of Florence return for season 2?
Netflix has confirmed that the lavish period drama will return for a second season later this year.
Season one was released on December 9, a few weeks after the final episode aired on Italian TV, and season two is likely to follow the same pattern.
What will happen in Medici: Masters of Florence season 2?
The first season charted the rise Cosimo de' Medici (Game Of Thrones’ Richard Madden), who became head of the Medici family after his father Giovanni (Dustin Hoffman) was murdered.
Through flashbacks, viewers learned how Giovanni schemed his way into power and pressured his sons into joining the family business.
Frank Spotnitz, the show’s co-creator, explained: “Season one is really about Cosimo’s journey.
Richard Madden plays Cosimo de' Medici
“For a time we decided to begin with Lorenzo ‘the Magnificent’ because in many ways his life represents the pinnacle of Medici achievement: the High Renaissance, Michelangelo, Da Vinci, Botticelli.
“But ultimately [we] decided to begin Season one with Giovanni and his son Cosimo.
“Now we are going to jump forward in time about 20 years for season two to tell the story of Lorenzo ‘the Magnificent’, and we’re actually anticipating that that will take two seasons."
Duston Hoffman plays Giovanni Medici
“In our story we emphasise his love of art and how he used his power and influence as head of the Medici bank to foster the revolutionary art that led to the Renaissance.”
Spotnitz has revealed that season 2 will jump ahead 20 years and will focus on Lorenzo ‘the Magnificent’, Cosimo’s grandson who reigned for more than 20 years but drove the family bank to ruin.
He told Variety: “When we first tackled this, we weren’t really sure where to begin the saga of the Medici.
Spotnitz also created Amazon's The Man In The High Castle, but quit the show ahead of its upcoming third season.

Medici: Masters of Florence season 2 cast
With season 2 set to move the story forward by two decades, it isn’t yet clear whether Dustin Hoffman and Richard Madden will return.
Both of their characters will be dead by the time Lorenzo comes into power, but fans are hopeful that they could appear through flashbacks.
It is thought that new actors will be cast to play Lorenzo and his family, but Spotnitz has admitted that there are “very big shoes to fill”.
He said: “We all feel we had an extraordinary cast in season one, and we want to do as well in season two. But we are still writing the scripts.”
When asked whether Madden could return, he replied: “I can’t say. My lips are sealed.”
