WhatsApp Web has a new competitor – from a very unlikely rival
Amazon has launched a new messaging service, called Chime.
The new video chat and conference call software boast similar functionality to Microsoft Skype.
Amazon Chime also has a number of features that WhatsApp has tried to compete with, thanks primarily to the launch of its WhatsApp Web platform, as well as the support for sending and receiving files, including PDFs.
According to Amazon, its new Chime software wants to simplify communication between teams and individuals in the workplace.
Video calls, VOIP calls, instant messaging and screening sharing are all supported by Amazon Chime.
The new Amazon-made communications app is available on Android, iOS, Mac, and Windows.

Amazon says its chat app was built from the ground-up with mobile in mind, so everything works seamlessly on smaller screen devices, like smartphones, and enables users to painlessly transfer from portable devices to sprawling desktops.
Chime lets you conduct video conference calls with a single tap or click. You can use video conferencing for up to 16 people on your desktop, or 8 people on mobile devices.
There's also a traditional chatroom element to the app that allows users to message with people, inside or outside of the organisation.
According to Amazon, "You can chat with just one person, or in a group, and you can share files instantly by simply attaching them to the conversation.

"Your chats are automatically synchronised across your devices, and your chat history is searchable."
Amazon has launched its own workplace messaging app, dubbed Amazon Chime
Amazon is also keen to emphasis the security benefits of switching over to Amazon Chime.
The visual roster also makes it quick and easy to see who has joined each meeting – and meetings can be locked so that only authenticated users can join.
Amazon Chime is free to try for 30 days, with no credit card.
