German-born Kirsten Farage spoke out following reports the former Ukip leader had moved into a bachelor pad in west London.

Mrs Farage was later spotted at the family home near Biggin Hill in Kent without her wedding ring.

Mrs Farage said: “My husband and I have lived separate lives for some years and he moved out of the family home a while ago.

“This is a situation that suits everyone and is not news to any of the people involved.”

The couple married in 1999 and have two children. Farage also has two sons from his first marriage.

When Farage quit as Ukip leader after last summer’s Brexit referendum victory he told the Daily Express of the huge strain his battle to leave the EU had put on his personal life.

He said: “It has been a huge chunk of my life doing this and it’s not easy.

“It has come at a cost to me and perhaps to those around me.”

Mr Farage – who has been an MEP since 1999 – has had two stints as leader of Ukip since 2006.

He gave up a lucrative career in the City to enter politics because of his concern about the damage that Brussels was doing to Britain.

The couple met in Frankfurt when Farage was a broker and the then Kirsten Mehr, was a bilingual government bond broker.

She gave up her career in the City to look after the children and work for her husband helping him with his correspondence.

Mrs Farage has also spoken of the toll taken by her husband’s gruelling work schedule as party leader which meant he was up by 5am and worked seven days a week.

She said: “He doesn’t get a lot of sleep, he doesn’t get a lot of rest, he lives on adrenaline a lot, he doesn’t eat regular meals.

"Now I am beginning to sound like his mother, and he smokes and drinks too much.

“But if you have that sort of lifestyle I think it is what keeps him going, it keeps the adrenaline going.”
