Wayne Rooney broke Manchester United’s club record of 249 goals set by Charlton when he curled in a free-kick deep in stoppage time to earn a 1-1 draw with Stoke.

Rooney, who joined United in 2004, had been stuck on 249 goals since netting in the 4-0 FA Cup win over Reading earlier this month.

“To surpass him in goals is something I never thought I'd do. I have the utmost respect for him.

"He came and congratulated me in the dressing room so I know he's pleased in some way.

"I'm a team player but records are important. When you finish your career you can look back on it and it's something to tell your kids."
