Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has struggled for game time during Jose Mourinho's debut season in charge.
Having started 27 games in the Premier League during Louis van Gaal's final season he has managed just 25 starts in all competitions under the Portuguese boss this term.
Rooney is said to have offers from China and MLS but has insisted previously he is happy at Old Trafford.
However, his former team-mate Ferdinand reckons he could be set for a fresh start elsewhere next season.
Ferdinand said on BT Sport: "I think it sounds like it is down to Rooney if he wants to stay, I believe he will want to go onto pastures new.

"[Michael] Carrick will wait to see if club offer him a new deal. There will be changes, Jose has his targets, I hope he gets them."
Rooney remains under contract with Manchester United until 2019 and Mourinho's comments after last night's Europa League final victory against Ajax suggested the 31-year-old could stay on for another season.
Asked if Rooney's late cameo appearance was the last we would see of Rooney, Mourinho replied: “No, Wayne was ready to play, he was a big option.

“But I didn't need to attack at 2-0. I told him yesterday that he could be the key man but he can perfectly be here next season.
“He is a very important player for us.
“If he stays next season I'd be very happy."
