Gerard Batten, one of the founding members of Ukip in 1993, has previously stood as an MP in Romford but believes Brexit could help swing voters to the eurosceptic party in future elections across Britain.
Mr Batten said: “It depends entirely where the by-election is, how strong the Ukip local party is, whether they have got good candidates or not.
“Of course, we don’t know where the next by-election is. Are more Labour MPs going to resign because they realise it’s hopeless and they must go and get a proper job somewhere, we don’t know.”

He added: “Don’t forget, there are a number of cases where the police are investigating the Conservative party in the 2015 election.
“These things disappear into the backroom of the police and Crown Prosecution Service but we could find ourselves with another spate of by-elections, in which case Nigel would have to make a decision about whether he wants to run.
“I would hope that he would… but I might run myself, we’d have to see.”
Paul Nutall is representing Ukip in the upcoming Stoke-on-Trent Central by-election while Fiona Mills is hoping to be elected for the party in Copeland.

The Ukip leader is hoping to overturn a 5,041 Labour majority and become the first party to win the seat, other than Corbyn’s party, since 1950.
However Mr Nuttall has endured a torrid week after posts from his website dated in 2011 wrongly claimed he had lost “close personal friends” in the Hillsborough – something which he admitted was not true.
However Mr Batten is unconvinced the debacle will not affect the Bootle native in the upcoming election.
He said: “There has been a mistake on what was written on his website… but its really a non-story. He’s explained it and that should be the end of it. In Stoke, it’s not a story quite frankly.”
