Tom Brady became a record-breaking quarterback for the New England Patriots

The Atlanta Falcons led 21-3 at half-time after a stellar second quarter and at one point in the second half led by 25 points.

But Brady led the Patriots to a stunning comeback including 19 points in the fourth quarter before James White's touchdown sealed victory in overtime.

And the veteran quarterback was quick to praise coach Bill Belichick and his Patriot team-mates for their roles in the victory.

"There were a lot of plays that coach talks about how you never know which one is going to be in the Super Bowl," Brady said.

"Tonight there were about 20 of those.

"I'm so proud of our guys, of what the coaches, the players and all the staff have accomplished all season.

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady could not restrain his emotions after the final whistle

"I'm so proud of what these guys have achieved."

Brady was visibly emotional in the immediate aftermath of the result and again when presented with the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

Having been banned for the first four games of the season for his role in the so-called 'Deflategate' scandal and with his mother having been ill, the 39-year-old struggled to hold his emotions in check.

"My family are all happy," added Brady.
