Calling into Shelagh Fogarty’s show on LBC, Joe took aim at the co-founder of Help Refugees UK Lliana Bird after the ministers went back on the figure of 3,500 child refugees over fears it was encouraging people traffickers.

The caller branded the caller a “do-gooder” and said the UK had “had enough”.

He blasted: “The British people have absolutely had enough… I help so many people around me, I always give money I always donate, I always give to charities, rescue dogs, other families’ children, I’m a very giving person.

“And if someone like me has had enough and drawn the line – times are changing.

"I would challenge your do-gooder there…"

The host was forced to cut in and ask the caller to be a more polite. After apologising, Joe launched back into another attack.

He said: “What I suggest she does is empty her own bank account, sell her own house, if she really means what she says.

Responding, Ms Bird said she had given up a “very nice” career 18 months ago to work for the charity.

“I gave that up to do what I’m doing today, I have not had a salary in over 18 months,” she added. “I have emptied my own pockets and my own savings. However, this isn’t really about me.

“We’re not talking about older teens and adults, who by the way many of them do deserve our care, respect and dignity, they are running from horrific situations, they are deeply traumatised.

“We are talking about 12-year-old and under children – children as young as six-years-old.”

She said all it would take was “less than one child per local authority” to ease the humanitarian crisis.

But the caller had the last say and hung up after blasting: “Well, I’m sorry, you’ve backed a losing horse my dear, times are changing, wake up!”
