This evening’s episode of the ITV singing competition saw each of the judge’s whittle down their groups to the hopefuls would be going through to the semi-finals.

The judges’ acts were split into trios and had to battle each other by as they shared the stage and performed a song in a bid to win a place in the next round of the contest.

Danny, 31, was forced to change his song choice for one of his trios after it was clear that the singers were struggling to get to grips with the track Hey Ya by Outkast.

He appeared to be getting frustrated as the singers, who revealed they had never heard of the song before, tried to get to grips with it.

When he first told them about the song, the girls Eboni, Hollie and Courtney looked at him blankly and even more so after he recited the famous line: “Shake it like a Polaroid picture” and performed the moves.

Eventually after some thought Danny was forced to change the song to Dancing in the Street by Martha Reeves & The Mandellas.

“I think with a lot of work it could be a really surprising battle,” he confided to the camera.

Many audience members took to social media to hit out at the judge for his decision as one person railed: “Why not pick a song that they know, doh #TheVoiceKidsUK.”

A second blasted the pop star on Twitter, posting: “Danny has the worse song choices #thevoicekidsuk.”

“If they don't know a song, is it too obvious to play them a recording of it to give 'em an idea? #TheVoiceKidsUK,” said a third.

“Course you had to change the song , you absolute twonk!!! But to Dancing in the Street!! #TheVoiceKidsUK,” said a fifth.

However, there were many others who simply felt their age that the young singers hadn't heard of the classic pop track.

"When the judges ask the kids if they know the song and they don't it makes me feel old, I'm only 19 #TheVoiceKidsUK," despaired one person.

A second added: "These girls don't know the song "hey ya"…. Call me old… But it's a 2003 chhhuuuunnee. #TheVoiceKidsUK."

Following the change in song and the battle, Danny chose to put through Courtney to the next round.

Along with Courtney, Jess F, Jack, Perry, Jake and Riccardo went through.

The Voice Kids continues on ITV tomorrow at 7.30pm.
