She plays a handmaid called Offred who is one of the few fertile women still left in Gilead and is assigned to a commander who she must serve.
Offred is subjected to a ceremonial rape in order to produce a child for the commander and his barren wife.
Earlier this year, the actress said that The Handmaid's Tale was a "human story" and never intended to play her character as a feminist.
While fans were shocked by her remarks, the 34-year-old has opened up about her comments and clarified that she does believe the drama is "first and foremost feminist".
"I don't think I quite said the right thing, clearly," she explained.

"Because if anything I said led anyone to believe that I'm not a feminist or The Handmaid's Tale isn't a feminist work then obviously I didn't say the right thing.
"There are many groups that are punished and much maligned in the show. Is it first and foremost feminist? Absolutely. It's called The Handmaid's Tale."
Speaking of the controversy that followed her remarks at the Tribeca Film Festival, Elisabeth told Radio Times: "[It] was an interesting learning experience, it was a wake up call. I didn't know anyone would give a s***."

It comes after Hulu's head of content, Craig Erwich, hinted that the second series would go beyond Margaret Atwood's novel on which it is based.
