Chester, a 22-year-old Zoology student from London, revealed he studies at Aberystwyth University in West Wales – but believed Cardiff was located in Scotland.
During the first question, 56-year-old host Bradley read: "Dundonians are natives of which Scottish city?"
The hopeful answered: "Cardiff?" before a bewildered Bradley announced: "Dundee!"
Fans fumed on social media and questioned the ITV casting team's abilities after letting him on to the show.
One viewer tweeted: "Wtf!?? He went to Uni in Wales but thinks that Cardiff is in Scotland!!? Best cancel the wedding mate and go back to Uni #TheChase #DullAsFk."

It came as fellow contestant Sally, a 60-year-old retired school secretary from Witham spoke to Bradley about her favourite pudding, a squidgy chocolate log.
