The brunette, 35, told a court before being led away in handcuffs: "I'm deeply ashamed and embarrassed for what I have done."
She added: "I have lost the only thing I ever wanted in my life – to teach."
The pupil, now 20, said she abused her while counselling him after a relative died of cancer.
"No 16-year-old should go through what I went through," he said in a statement.

His life was "changed forever," he added.
"This experience brought a lot of stress into my life – before, during and especially after it happened.
"This whole experience was confusing because of her role as a teacher and her age."
Leahey tried to put some blame on the boy, claiming her texts between February and June 2013 were an ill-considered response to him sexually assaulting her and being "overly aggressive”.
But prosecutor Meg Rodriquez denied the allegation, saying: "The facts do not support what Miss Leahey says now."

Leahey admitted endangering the welfare of a child by debauching him with the sexually-graphic messages.
A string of other charges, including sexual assault and sending him raunchy, partially nude selfies were dismissed in a plea deal at an earlier hearing.
Judge Salem Ahto acknowledged Leahey occasionally texted the child words to the effect of "Wait a couple of years, wait until you're 18."
"But then you didn't pay any attention to your own statement," he told Leahey at the Superior Court in Morristown, New Jersey, USA.
The English tutor said she had been overcome by anxiety and panic attacks since her arrest in 2013 and lived in fear of running into the victim and former school colleagues at Parsippany Hills High.

But she also cast herself as a victim, claiming she sexted him to stop his physical pursuit of her.
"I am guilty of texting my pupil,” she said.
"At the time I did it I thought it would help to end the ongoing sexual assault. Now I realise there were and are far better ways to have dealt with the situation. "I'm deeply ashamed and embarrassed for what I've done. Please know there was no malice in my actions.
"If I could change how I reacted to the situation I would. Now all I can do is try to repair the damage that was done. "All of my life I've wanted to be helpful.
"I've gotten myself into a terrible situation that no teacher ever wants to face, confronted by an overly aggressive student.
"I failed to seek help and in doing so failed the rest of my students, my colleagues as well. I have failed myself by allowing this conduct to occur.
"This situation is not indicative of who I am as a person or a teacher." A friend of the pupil had claimed the teen told him he and Leahey touched each other's genitals in a classroom and would do "other physical things”.
And a colleague of Leahey's said the boy told him he and Leahey had "made out" while "fooling around" in her car after she drove him home.
Cops said Leahey admitted touching his privates, but only because he forced her hand on to them.
She also claimed he was abusive with her, would touch her breasts and bottom and put his hand down her pants.
But Leahey, who was also a hockey coach, denied having intercourse while seeing him.
The youngster, who was in court with his mother and other relatives, has filed a lawsuit against the school district alleging negligent supervision of Leahey.
