Stan Collymore has hit out over Jesse Lingard's new contract
United last week announced they had agreed a long-term contract extension with Lingard, who has come through the club’s academy.
But former Premier League star Collymore doesn’t think the midfielder is worth the money.
He told the Mirror: "A squad player such as Jesse Lingard getting around £5m a year is absurd.
"His new Manchester United contract is another sign the Premier League has more money than sense, coming on the back of the £174m odd spent on agents fees.
"Lingard is getting similar money to what Harry Kane and Dele Alli will be at Spurs and they are two of the big-hitters, crucial to Mauricio Pochettino's team.
"But maybe it will say to United and Jose Mourinho that there is a little too much fat in this squad that will quite happily sit around on big money knowing they won't be called on to play 38 games at eight or nine out of 10.
"Instead Lingard can sit there pulling dopey faces on Instagram and Twitter, earning £100,000 a week and only be called on 15 times a season. How great is that?"
