Square Enix news: Avengers Marvel project, Final Fantasy 15 Carnival and FFXV DLC

A new Square Enix Avengers project was announced today, which will include a new multi-year, multi-game licensing agreement with Marvel.

This will involve developing and publishing original games based on beloved Marvel Super Heroes, beginning with The Avengers.

The first Avengers title is being developed by Crystal Dynamics, developers of the award winning Tomb Raider series as well as input from Eidos-Montreal.

“The Avengers project is being designed for gamers worldwide and will be packed with all the characters, environments, and iconic moments that have thrilled longtime fans of the franchise,” an official Marvel message reads.

“Featuring a completely original story, it will introduce a universe gamers can play in for years to come. More details on The Avengers project and other games will be announced in 2018.”

Jay Ong, Senior Vice President, Games & Innovation, Marvel Entertainment added: “By partnering with Crystal Dynamics and Eidos-Montréal, we are now working with two of the industry’s most talented and respected game development studios to bring Marvel stories to life in ways our fans have never experienced,“

“The Avengers project is a perfect example of how Marvel is making games a key part of the landscape for Marvel storytelling, alongside comics, television and film. We can only do this by matching our greatest Super Heroes with the world’s top developers, such as the creative minds at Square Enix.”

“Marvel’s diverse, innovative universe has created millions of longtime fans, including all of us,” said Phil Rogers, CEO, Square Enix Americas and Europe. “It’s exciting to bring together Square Enix’s award-winning development studios with Marvel’s extraordinary storytellers to establish a new entertainment powerhouse.

“This collaboration of passion and talent will craft epic, imaginative experiences allowing gamers to live out their Super Hero dreams like never before.”

A special Final Fantasy 15 Carnival in-game event is taking place in the city of Altissia right now and is scheduled to run until February 20.

The Moogle Chocobo Carnival brings a selection of fun carnival games, new side-quests, new outfits for Noctis as well as a fireworks show, among other festive treats.

You can go for a boat ride around the city, check out the new cuisine on offer, try your hand at blasting targets, as wel as take on the new Chocobo time-trial.

Square Enix has confirmed that all players will have access to the carnival by downloading the recently released Holiday Pack (Free Version).

Season Pass owners and those who have the premium Holiday Pack + will receive more in-game content though, including a mariachi-inspired ensemble for the main character Noctis to wear in exchange for medallions won during events.

There is also another free update being made available to all players from today that include the all-new manual photographing feature to allow players to freely take pictures outside of battle.

FFXV Holiday Pack (Free Version):

  • Nixperience Band – A device that stops experience points from being tallied, preventing the party from levelling up for an added challenge.
  • Warrior's Fanfare – A scroll of sheet music containing a song of jubilation that provides additional AP for earning an A+ in Offense outside of training.
  • Choco-Mog Tee – Exclusive T-shirt
  • Carnival Passport
  • (The Carnival Passport is functionally identical to the paid version.)

FFXV Holiday Pack (Premium Version):

  • Ring of Resistance – Renders entire party to be resistant to magical friendly fire.
  • Tech Turbocharger – Accelerates the tech bar replenishment rate, but freezes the Armiger bar.
  • Armiger Accelerator – Accelerates the Armiger bar replenishment rate, but freezes the tech bar.
  • Blitzer's Fanfare – Sheet music containing a song of jubilation that provides additional AP for earning an A+ in Time outside of training.
  • Tactician's Fanfare – Sheet music containing a song of jubilation that provides additional AP for earning an A+ in Finesse outside of training.
  • Key of Prosperity – A lucky charm that increases the rate at which fallen foes leave behind items of value.
  • Stamina Badge – A device that enables Noctis to sprint and hang without expending stamina.

It appears that Square Enix has picked up on apparent jitters from fans on the prospect of new Final Fantasy 15 DLC content, as well as further updates to the game planned for the future.

In a new interview with US Gamer, Tabata brokes the subject while also confirming that this is something that will happen a lot in the future too.

"The reason it sparked debate was probably because we announced that we will continue to update a single-player game," he commented.

"This model has not been fully established yet. The fans who have grown accustomed to playing traditional Final Fantasy games may feel uneasy about this unfamiliar initiative.

“That said, I personally believe the approach to updating single-player games, as we are doing with this title, will continue on in the future as a new trend."

Tabata also clarified the big differences between what Square Enix are describing as updates and DLC, with updates looking to improve the core offering for free and DLCs looking to provide new ways to enjoy the game, at a price

New single-player content is being cooked by the Final Fantasy 15 team that will help flesh out some of the other characters and give players the chance to play as some of them as well.

"The development team worked extremely hard around the clock to finish the development of FFXV, and the game has been well received from both media and consumers since its release,” Tabata added.
