Angus Council candidate Paul Wright posted sickening porn images to his Twitter page
Last week, we told how Angus Council candidate Paul Wright had uploaded the sickening and potentially illegal images to the social media network during a heated online argument.
The 58-year-old deleted the disgusting posts hours later but not before they were seen by a number of people, including members of the local SNP branch.
Despite being made aware of his behaviour, the SNP continued to support their candidate for the Brechin and Edzell ward arguing he had quickly removed the "inappropriate" posts.
However, Wright has now stepped down as the party's candidate but has vowed to contest the seat in an independent capacity.
His resignation followed a branch meeting on Tuesday, when it became clear he no longer had the support of many members.
The branch planned to take action at an extraordinary general meeting that was hastily arranged for Thursday causing Wright to announce he was stepping down.
His former election agent David Smart explained: "At Tuesday's meeting it was obvious that many people, in particular women, didn't want to work with him.

"We decided to hold an extraordinary general meeting on Thursday night. It was obvious that if we were to hold the meeting on Thursday night that if he wasn't going to jump, he was going to be pushed.
"I spoke to Paul on Wednesday and gave him cognisance of the situation and he decided to stand down and resign his membership of the SNP. I think from a political point of view it was essential."
He added: "No matter what the justification of what he did was, it wasn't going to wash."
But despite Wright's resignation, he will still appear as an SNP candidate on the ballot paper as the deadline for making changes has passed.

He is also the organiser of the Be More Brechin pro-independence group and a veteran member of City of Brechin and District community council.
His Twitter account has 2,500 followers, including politicians from all parties including Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson and the SNP's chief whip at Westminster and Angus MP Mike Weir.
However, many of his followers are local people who simply want to keep up to date with events in and around Brechin.
The two offensive photos were posted during a heated argument with other Twitter users shortly before Christmas, apparently in an attempt to smear one particular individual.

Too disgusting to describe in a family newspaper, the images portray acts of bestiality and could be viewed as illegal under Scots law.
Wright said: "The local branch of the SNP no longer want me to stand as their candidate. There is not the time available to undo the damage that has been done."
The SNP's Brechin and Edzell branch confirmed Wright had resigned, adding that the party had decided that it was "unacceptable" for him to be put forward as a candidate.
