Sir Bill Cash, the Conservative member for Stone, launched a scathing attack on his fellow MPs as the Brexit debate continued into the afternoon of the second day.

The ardent Brexiteer addressed the house, starting by reminding them of the auspicious date – 25 years to the day since the Maastricht Treaty was signed – and used his platform to passionately make the case for supporting the Brexit bill.

He slapped down Remoaners saying: “I’m not going to vote against this bill under any circumstances whatsoever.

“But the reality is that we’ve moved well ahead, we’ve now had the referendum which was accepted by six to one in this house.

“We have also had a vote on this very bill which was passed by 498, 500 if you include the tellers, and 214 to agree the principle of this bill.

“When I look at these new clauses and I think in deference to the people who wish to speak through the intricacies of these vast number of new clauses, it is not going to help us very much for a very simple reason, that the bottom line is that it would effectively give a veto to override the result of the referendum. It’s as simple as that.

“The decision was given to [the public] by an act of parliament and they made that decision to leave. That is definitive.

“And I don’t see any purpose, I have to say, and I’m not going to waste time on some of the intricate arguments that we’ve heard so far, many of which i think are going round in circles.

I say shame on you

Sir Bill Cash

“The real question is do we actually implement the decision of the United Kingdom or not, the answer is that we do, and we must. And that was conceded by this house and all, almost everybody.

“The bottom line is we’re giving effect to the decision of the United Kingdom electorate.

“As far as these proposals are concerned we are faced with a simple decision, which is going to be decided by a vote later today.

“All these attempts, in my judgement, to produce different versions of delay will effectively i hope be overridden by either by the vote that is taken by this house as a whole in line with he decision taken by the British people which is the right way to proceed.

“Nothing is to stand in its [Brexit bill] way.”

And he finished his speech by blasting his fellow MPs, saying: “They know perfectly well what they are doing, they are trying to delay to obstruct to prevent this bill going through – and I say shame on you.”
