Serena Williams (left) beat her sister Venus to win a 23rd Grand Slam
Serena Williams moved ahead of Steffi Graf to become the most successful tennis player of the Open era.
The American won the first set in 47 minutes after trading breaks of serve with Venus in the opening games.
Serena has now won 23 Grand Slam titles
Venus last won a Grand Slam title in 2008
The Rod Laver Arena was a sell-out for the final
But she took control to break for 4-3 and see out the opening set.
Venus, a seven-time Grand Slam winner herself, saved two break points midway through the second set but couldn’t last a third as Serena broke for a 4-3 lead.
And after surviving a scare in the final game at 5-4, Serena dispatched her sister with a forehand down the line that Venus couldn’t return.
"Congratulations Serena on number 23," Venus said. "I have been right there with you, some of them I lost right there against you. It's been an awesome win.
"All those times i couldn't be there, didn't get there, you were there. I'm enormously proud of you, you mean the world to me.
"I am, God willing, would love to come back. Thank you for all the love."
