Samsung Galaxy S8 – Leaked photos, concept images, and renders Sun, January 1, 2017

Samsung Galaxy S8 looks set to be the smartphone to beat this year. Following a swathe of rumours from the Chinese supply chain, a number of graphic designers have cooked-up high-resolution renders of what the smartphone could look like, when it launches in the UK in April 2017

Samsung Galaxy S8 will get a dramatic new design, with no buttons, and an edge-to-edge display

Samsung Galaxy S8 is widely-tipped to launch on March 29th 2017.

The hotly-anticipated Galaxy S8 has been the subject of a innumerable rumours, with whispers of a bezel-less dual-curved display, iris scanner for additional security, and larger battery capacity.

And now, the latest rumours suggest we might get our first glimpse of the Samsung Galaxy S8 earlier than expected.

Samsung will show a brief teaser trailer for its forthcoming flagship phone on February 26th during its press conference at the MWC tradeshow, The Korean Herald has reported.

Samsung's teaser clip is rumoured to be under a minute. That's probably just enough to get an early glimpse at the much-hyped smartphone.

Samsung is likely hoping to spark enough interest in the Galaxy S8 to distract people from the LG G6 and BlackBerry Mercury announcements also expected at Mobile World Congress this year.

The South Korean company is also expected to use its MWC press conference to unveil the Galaxy Tab S3 as well as an array of updated wearables.

Samsung had planned to reveal the Galaxy S8 at MWC 2017, as it had done with the previous two generations of its flagship Galaxy S range.

However the technology company confirmed it had pushed-back the launch of its phone during a press conference last month.

Samsung is now believed to have finalised the design of its next-generation smartphone.

According to sources, the South Korean company has finalised the specs and look of the Galaxy S8, and have sent a prototype of the final phone to the CEO and Vice Chairman for approval.

If that's true, then the consolidation of rumours around the Samsung Galaxy S8 makes sense, including a recent report from CNET Korea that reiterated a number of long-rumoured features coming to the device.

According to the latest whispers, the Samsung Galaxy S8 will ship in two models – both with a dual-curved, edge-to-edge display.

The Galaxy S8 will ship with a large 5.8-inch Quad HD display and a 3,250mAh battery, but maintain the same footprint as the Galaxy S7.

There is also expected to be a 6.2-inch QHD AMOLED display model, with a hefty 3,750mAh cell, marketed as the Galaxy S8 Plus.

For comparison, those display sizes and battery capacities are both larger than the award-winning Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge last year.

According to CNET Korea, Samsung will accommodate these larger displays by ditching the physical home button.

This move is expected to enable Samsung to keep a relatively small footprint for the phone, despite the phablet-size screen.

Samsung will embed the home button functionality into the display, CNET Korea claims, with software navigation keys appearing on the display for the Back and Menu buttons.

The fingerprint sensor, which has previously been included in the physical home button, will be relocated to the back of the phone.

CNET says the relocated fingerprint sensor isn't in the centre of the rear panel under the camera, like on rival devices from Huawei and LG, because most people will use the device with their right hand.

When holding the Galaxy S8 one-handed with your right hand, the index finger will naturally fall on the precise location of the fingerprint scanner, CNET Korea claims.

The report also reiterates rumours that the device will carry a USB-C port for charging and syncing, as well as a 3.5mm headphone port.

Other rumours have suggested the larger Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus will sport a dual-camera set-up, like the iPhone 7 Plus.

Both models are expected to be powered by the power-efficient new Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, coupled with 4GB of RAM.

By the time the phone launches in March, it will have been over two years since Samsung's flagship phone underwent a substantial facelift – with the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge being more of a subtle refinement of the design debuted with the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, rather than a drastic design overhaul.

An early report from AndroidPolice claimed Samsung was looking to appropriate one of the headline features of the latest generation iPhones – 3D Touch.

The South Korean company will implement the technology with its new on-screen navigation buttons, which users will reportedly be able to customise.

Samsung will have to adapt the Android operating system itself, since the mobile software has not yet been updated by Google to support the technology.

Rumours of Android manufacturers looking to jump on the pressure-sensitive bandwagon first came to light more than a year ago when Synaptics issued a press release touting that it had developed a ClearForce touchscreen display controller capable of measuring varying levels of pressure.

The Galaxy S8 could also be the first phone to ship with Samsung's clever new virtual assistant, purportedly dubbed Bixby.

The virtual assistant was created by Viv Labs, the team that created Siri before it was acquired by Apple for use in the iPhone, iPad and Mac.

Samsung acquired the company back in October 2016.

Bixby will reportedly be able to use the cameras on the Samsung Galaxy S8 to scan your surroundings, surfacing useful information about what it is looking at.

According to SamMobile, Samsung will include a Bixby button within its camera app that immediately launches a search function.

This will allow the Samsung Galaxy S8 to identify the objects it is pointed at – and will be able to direct you to online retailers where you can buy the item.

The search functionality will reportedly be closely tied with Samsung Pay.

Amazon's first smartphone – the Fire Phone – had a very similar feature, which let customers use the camera to instantly find listings online.

Elsewhere, the Bixby-powered camera app on the Galaxy S8 will also be able to read text, SamMobile has claimed.

Point the camera at text and the clever assistant will be able to scan it and transform it into a digital format.

This has a number of useful applications – not least being able to quickly copy-and-paste from real-world menus, signs, and more.

It could also allow the Bixby assistant to translate restaurant menus and more, like the standalone Google app does on Android and iOS.

Speaking following the acquisition by Samsung, Viv Labs CEO Dag Kittlaus said: "Samsung is setting its sights on becoming a major player in software and services, and specifically AI. Samsung Pay has already proven to be one of the most successful mobile payment platforms in the market and SmartThings is another software acquisition signalling their conviction.

"And they have installed a new cadre of senior SW-savvy management stretching all the way to the top with a mission.

"You will soon come to see the utter seriousness of Samsung’s intentions. And like us, they aim to win."

Sources speaking to SamMobile claim the Galaxy S8's in-built S Health app will get a major feature-bump that allows smartphone owners to get in touch directly with doctors.

Samsung will reportedly announce a number of tie-ins with partners including Amwell and WebMD to let Samsung owners search for medication and symptoms within the S Health app. Users are also expected to be able to schedule appointments with doctors via video chat within the same application.

According to the report by SamMobile, users will be able to pay for doctor's appointments in-app, as well as take photos to illustrate your condition and locate pharmacies near to your location if the doctor recommends medicine.
