England star Ryan Bertrand – Eddie Jones is an inspiration
The England rugby boss spoke to the footballers on Friday evening at the invitation of his friend Gareth Southgate — and the impact was clearly just what the football manager had desired.
“The squad as a whole came out from the meeting a lot closer,” said Bertrand, the left-back from Southampton who played so well in the midweek friendly away to Germany.
“Our ideas of how to achieve success were a lot clearer.
“For me personally, what came across that Eddie Jones is a very confident man. He is very into his work ethic. He told us that as long as work hard you get your success.
“It was a massive inspiration to listen to him talk about all of his work. England were on edge of a fantastic world record — and to find out how they did it and see and what measures he put in place to achieve that sustainable success is a real eye-opener.

“That was the thing we took from it — the need for sustainable success, not just a victory here or there.”
Bertrand will play against Lithuania today in the continued absence of injured Spurs left back Danny Rose, and hopes to press his international credentials once more.

“I played the other night, but it’s a very competitive team to get into,” he added.
“We have great depth in all positions. When you have a chance to play it’s about the team. You can’t worry about your own ambitions and stresses.”
The Southampton star also praised the impact of Southgate on the squad in the past few months, saying: “Gareth has massive qualities.

“It is a breath of fresh air to be part of this England team with no stone unturned tactically. He also encourages us to express ourselves, and we have the perfect stage to go out and achieve.
“We have more responsibility as players within the group. At every meeting thoughts are shared between the players and coaching staff. We are encouraged to dissect games and come to conclusions ourselves.
“We are creating a new culture. An open culture that focused on being the best we can be. As a group we want to achieve things for the whole country. We all have the ability so there is no reason why we can’t.
“It’s important we all buy into that. What Eddie Jones said is that in the end it’s the players who lead, who make sure the culture of the group is good. I got the impression the rugby players have that philosophy.”
