Rory McIlroy won in Austin after Gary Woodland pulled out
McIlroy’s second round opponent, Gary Woodland was forced out due to a ‘personal family matter’ and the American has returned to his Orlando residence.
But while McIlroy received his first point in the $US 9.75m event he will have to wait the outcome of the second round match between Dane Soren Kjeldsen and Argentinean Emiliano Grillo.
If Kjeldsen, who defeated McIlroy 2 & 1 in Thursdays opener, beats Grillo then Kjeldsen would go through to the last 16 with three points given he will get a point for the absent Woodland in Friday’s final round encounter.
McIlroy had been at the Austin Country Club course in readiness for his match with Woodland but quickly curtailed further practice in the bright but very windy conditions.
And Lee Westwood is also staring at an early exit if Marc Leishman, and winner of last week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational, wins his match against American Pat Perez.
Westwood had been due to meet Aussie Jason Day on Thursday but Day withdrew today after revealing his mother is to undergo lung cancer surgery.
Westwood spent his day off joining the Sky Sports on-course commentary team.
