The Premier League giants have agreed to allow the German midfielder to leave the club immediately to join MLS side Chicago Fire.
The 32-year-old signed a one-year deal worth around £70,000 a week to move to America.
German football expert Raphael Honigstein claimed Mourinho had made Schweinsteiger surplus to requirements because he saw him as a symbol of Louis Van Gaal’s disastrous reign.
Speaking on BBC Radio’s 5 Live, he said: “I’m not surprised he is gone now, I’m just surprised it took him so long to go.
A German football expert has explained why Mourinho allowed Schweinsteiger to leave
Mourinho saw him of one of the symbols of the Van Gaal era and he wanted to change things
“Before he came back from his holidays Mourinho had already decided he is not part of the squad – there’s not a lot he could do if your coach makes a decision before you start training.
“I think it was more of a personal decision, not because against Schweinsteiger, but personal against Louis Van Gaal I think.
“Mourinho saw him of one of the symbols of the Van Gaal era and he very clearly wanted to change things and signal this is going to be a new Man United squad.
“It is a bit of shame, at the same time I think it was genuinely his dream to play for another team after Bayern and United was a team that emotionally appealed to him.”
After the announcement the German sent a heartfelt message to Manchester United fans thanking them for his time at the club.

“Dear fans, I have decided to make a permanent move to Chicago Fire,” he said.
“I really wish I could have done more for you but it was time for me to make a change.
“Thanks for your amazing support during my time at the club, I will never forget it. Having been part of the team who won the FA Cup – it makes me very proud.

“I’d also like to say thank you very much for the fans, the atmosphere, the staff and the club, and especially my fellow players – thank you very much.
“I believe and I’m sure that Jose Mourinho will bring back the trophies to Manchester United soon and I wish you all the very best. Thanks very much and goodbye.”
Schweinsteiger will be joining the likes of Ashley Cole, Andrea Pirlo and Bradley Wright-Phillips plying their trade in the MLS.
The deal is subject to a medical and a visa being obtained but both parities are confident of finalising the move.
