Queen's foot guards have worst records of drug abuse across armed forces

Among the whopping 730 servicemen and women who tested positive for taking drugs including cocaine, ecstasy, cannabis and steroids last year, 80 Foot Guards were caught taking drugs and were immediately sacked.

The number of drug-taking soldiers has increased by 30 per cent since 2015 and is now the equivalent of three members of the armed forces failing drug tests every day.

In response to the figures released to the Daily Star Online, a source said: “There’s no place for drugs in the armed forces. Military personnel have to be able to trust each other with their lives and you can’t do that if someone is off their head on drugs.”

Although the Queen’s guards had the worst overall drugs record, the RAF witnessed a huge rise of 100 per cent, as 80 air personnel failed drug tests in 2016, compared to 40 in 2015.

According to the findings, 50 of those service personnel tested positive for taking banned steroids.

The news of illegal drugs within the armed forces comes weeks after a report confirmed more than 500 soldiers had been receiving treatment for alcohol abuse over the last four years and 500 female soldiers required medical attention, according to the Sun.

Explaining why they conduct drug tests, a spokesman for the Ministry of Defence said: “We conduct compulsory drug test because substance misuse is incompatible with service life.

“Only around 0.3 per cent of the armed forces fail them and anyone who falls short of our high standards can expect to be disciplined.”

Last year, Polish historian and author Lukasz Kamienski released the book “Shooting Up” which claimed soldiers used drugs in the war to increase their killing capabilities.

Speaking to Vice, Mr Kamienski said the soldiers drug use began during World War Two.

He added: “The anthropological evidence shows us that we are not warlike people. It is very difficult to cross the line where we become able to kill fellow humans.”
