Ms Perry’s Devizes constituency voted to leave the European union

Speaking in the House of Commons, Claire Perry complained about “hysterical” rhetoric around Brexit, before comparing politicians who back Brexit to Islamic fundamentalists.

Ms Perry told MPs: "I have to say that the tone of this debate – and we have heard a little bit, although it is starting to calm down – sometimes borders on the hysterical.

"I feel like sometimes I am sitting along with colleagues who are like jihadis in their support for a hard Brexit."

Perry complained about 'hysterical' rhetoric, then claimed brexiteers were like jihadis

While Ms Perry has vowed to back the triggering of Article 50 she is believed to have defied her own government by voting in favour of a failed amendment that would have seen parliament approve any new treaties before the final agreement with the EU bloc.

It comes after a day of tense words in the Commons, with speaker John Bercow forced to apologise for trying to ban Donald Trump from speaking to MPs at a state visit later this year.

The Commons Speaker was lambasted by his House of Lords equivalent who revealed Mr Bercow had said sorry for not warning him before yesterday’s rant.

Mr Bercow vented he would “strongly oppose” an address from the US President when he comes to the UK on a state visit later this year.

He said he was against the Republican coming to Westminster Hall, accusing the Mr Trump of “racism and sexism”.

Although Mr Bercow won the applause of some MPs, the House of Lords Speaker, who also has a say on whether the President can visit Parliament, hit back at the remarks.

Lord Fowler said he had an “open mind” about accepting a request from Donald Trump to speak “if and when it’s made”.

As the Speaker is seen as an impartial and apolitical position, Lord Fowler argued it was “not my role” to argue for or against the idea.

Unhappy he had not been consulted by Mr Bercow before the controversial remarks were made, Lord Fowler said: “[John Bercow] contacted me this morning, he told me that while he maintained his view on the issue, he was genuinely sorry for failing to conta
