Both keepers used to play in Madrid, but for rivals Atletico, and both still have big ties to the Spanish capital.
Courtois's wife and daughter still live there while De Gea's wife is also from there and desperate to return.
Other options for Real Madrid include Tottenham's Hugo Lloris and AC Milan youngster Gianluigi Donnarumma.

New striker bid
Real Madrid are ready to pay the £85m (€100m) release clause to sign Andrea Belotti, according to reports in Italy.
The 23-year-old is being monitored by a host of clubs in England but Madrid have now entered the race.

Florentino Perez insists the Copa del Rey final between Barcelona and Alaves on May 27 will not be played at Madrid's Bernabeu because of scheduled maintenance work.
"The Copa final cannot be played at the Bernabeu because there is work going on," he said.
