Ross Wilson has rejected the role of Rangers director of football
However, the Saints man has reportedly informed Ibrox managing director Stewart Robertson he is no longer interested in the position.
The Scottish Sun claim Wilson contacted the club on Monday to deliver the news which will come as a major blow for the Gers.
Rangers are focused on bringing in Pedro Caixinha as manager
The club are said to have headhunted Wilson for the newly-created position of director of football and held extensive talks with him.
But Rangers will now reportedly turn their attention to back-up candidate Paul Mitchell who was formerly recruitment boss at Tottenham.
A deal for Mitchell, however, is not thought to be a priority as the club focus their attention on bringing Pedro Caixinha in as manager.

Rangers have been without a head coach since Mark Warburton left the club in bizarre circumstances last month and have set their sights on Caixinha.
The 46-year-old is currently in charge of Al-Gharafa Sports Club in Qatar but is reportedly close to linking up with the Scottish side.
Sky sources claim he is awaiting the blessing of club president Sheikh Jassim Bin Thamer Al Thani before flying from the Middle East to Scotland to finalise the deal.
