A PS5 release date announcement to counterbalance the Xbox Scorpio seems doubtful
The tech giant have been celebrating new figures that show a total of 70m monthly active users and 26.4 million PS Plus-paying members.
That’s on top of Sony’s gaming division recently reporting profits of £944 million, the biggest since 1998.
But with the Xbox Scorpio on the horizon, there have been predictions made that a possible PS5 release date announcement could arrive sooner rather than later.
Macquarie Capital Securities analyst Damian Thong predicts Sony “to release its next-generation PlayStation by the second half of 2018,” according to the Wall Street Journal.
The claim isn’t naming the new console as the PS5 and isn’t necessarily based on any kind of insider information, but it should be noted that Thong correctly predicted both the PS4 Pro and Slim before their announcements.

It should also be noted that Sony provided a long build up for the launch of the PS4, announcing it nine months before its prospective release.
So could this mean we could hear something before the end of 2017?
Possibly, although as the numbers listed above of PlayStation 4 sales suggest, Sony have the time to push further with their current console, making June a little premature for such a big reveal.
Sony has so far shipped a total 60 million PS4 units worldwide, solid numbers that they hope to expand in the next fiscal year.

18 million units sold is the new target, which suggests that a price drop would be needed to really draw gamer attentions during Holiday 2017.

It should be noted that at this time Sony have yet to confirm anything like a PS4 price drop coming our way, although fans definitely wouldn’t complain if something like that did happen.
Michael Pachter, analyst at Wedbush Securities, believes there’s more to the 18m unit estimate than Sony are letting on, perhaps even pointing to a PS4 price drop.
Speaking to Gamingbolt, Pachter gave his take on the possibility of PS2 sales figures and whether a retail cost cut is on the cards.
“I don’t think it will outsell the PS2, mostly because the competition from Xbox and Switch will soak up too much of the addressable market,” he said.
”Yes, if they price the PS4 correctly, they can sell another 18 million, and I think the forecast suggests that there is a price cut coming.”
