PS Plus vs Xbox Games with Gold February 2017

PS Plus and Xbox One Games with Gold freebies have been announced for February 2017, which means it's time once again to see which lineup is best.

PS4 owners with a PS Plus subscription can download the likes of LittleBigPlanet 3 from February 7, while Xbox One Games with Gold members can pick up Project Cars.

The PS Plus February 2017 lineup in full:

  • LittleBigPlanet 3 (PS4)
  • Not a Hero (PS4)
  • Starwhal (PS3, Cross Buy with PS4)
  • Anna: Extended Edition (PS3)
  • Ninja Senki DX (PS Vita, Cross Buy with PS4)
  • TorqueL (PS Vita, Cross Buy with PS4)

The Xbox One Games with Gold lineup in full:

  • Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime: Available from February 1-28 on Xbox One
  • Project Cars Digital Edition: Available from February 16-March 15 on Xbox One
  • Monkey Island 2: Special Edition: Available from February 1-15 on Xbox 360 & Xbox One
  • Star Wars: The Force Unleashed: Available from February 16-28 on Xbox 360 & Xbox One

With the lineups announced in full, let's see which selection is best. Microsoft just about scored the victory in January, following a more convincing victory in December for Xbox One.

And remember, Xbox 360 and Cross-buy games will only come into the equation if it's a draw…

PS Plus free games for February 2017

Let's start with Xbox One Games with Gold, which kicks off with Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime, which is described as a co-op couch adventure. Then there's Project Cars Definitive Edition, which is a racing sim with lots of courses and cars.

Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime…

"Explore a neon galaxy in your very own battleship in LOVERS IN A DANGEROUS SPACETIME, a thrilling 1- to 4-player couch co-op adventure. Take control of turrets, lasers, shields and thrusters, using teamwork to triumph over the evil forces of Anti-Love. Deep space is a dangerous place, but you don’t have to face it alone!CO-OP GAMEPLAYTeam up with up to three friends (or an AI space-pet) to man the different battle stations. All players fill important roles at all times, and nobody gets left behind.UPGRADEABLE SHIPSFind and combine powerful space-gems to customize your ship's weapons. Each gem gives different abilities, letting you learn the right tools for every situation.SIMPLE CONTROLS, DEEP CHALLENGEControlling your spacenaut is so simple that anyone can jump in quickly, but getting all players to work together like a well-oiled machine, battling a galaxy of evil robots – that’s the tricky part."

Project Cars Digital Edition…

"Project CARS represents the next-generation of racing simulation as the ultimate combination of fan desire and developer expertise.Discover an unrivaled immersion fuelled by world-class graphics and handling that allows you to truly feel the road. Create a driver, pick from a huge variety of motorsports and write your own tale in a sandbox career mode. Featuring an unprecedented track roster, a ground-breaking dynamic time of day & weather system as well as deep tuning & pit stop functionality, Project CARS leaves the competition behind in the dust.

How they rate…

Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime gets things off to a strong start, scoring an impressive 82% on Metacritic. Reviewers have called it a unique and colourful adventure that's utterly charming and provides a real challenge.

Project Cars isn't far behind, earning a whopping 81% on Metacritic. Reviews praise the ferocious and tactical racing gameplay, picking out the visuals and stunning weather effects.

LittleBigPlanet 3…

"Join Sackboy and his amazing team of new friends on a wild adventure across a mysterious, unexplored world packed with endless surprises. Play with all of the brilliantly unique talents of OddSock, Swoop and Toggle as the newcomers work together with Sackboy to solve puzzles and explore the creativity-powered planet Bunkum. You can also dip into the endless creativity of the global LBP community to play millions of home-built levels and if you’re feeling inspired, grab hold of a sack of brand new tools to quickly and easily design your very own games."

Not a Hero…

"Professional assassin turned amateur campaign manager Steve is charged with cleaning up the city by an anthropomorphic rabbit and mayoral candidate from the future named BunnyLord."

How they rate…

LittleBigPlanet 3 has a respectable Metascore of 79%. Reviewers have praised the single-player campaign, which feels more fleshed out than in previous games. The deep customisation and thousands of user-generated experiences also gets a mention.

Not a Hero, meanwhile, has a decent Metascore of 75%. Reviewers love the humour and the visual style, although some feel the challenge is too great at times, especially for gamers new to the shooter genre.

State of Decay 2 on Xbox One and Windows

VERDICT…

February's Games with Gold and PS Plus lineups are both strong, although Xbox One just about edges it, especially when you factor in hits like Monkey Island 2 and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime is a wonderfully hypnotic co-op couch adventure that's more than just a little bit addictive, while Project Cars is one of the deepest and most accomplished racing games available today.

But that's not to say PS4 owners should feel disappointed. Not a Hero is a stylish shooter that packs a real punch, and it's hard not to love LittleBigPlanet 3.

Let's hope the March Games with Gold and PS Plus lineups are as strong.
