The new Legendary Pokemon Go update is being planned for the summer
Pokemon Go developer Niantic has been sending out hints over the past few months that something big is set to arrive this summer.
The popular Android and Apple app is looking to celebrate its first year in style, with some much-wanted features being lined up for release.
And having teased during the Webby Awards that this summer was going to be “Legendary” it looks like fans should prepare for a series of exciting new Pokemon Go updates.
It appears that a wave of new features are coming the game, including the final release of Gen 1 Legendaries, as well as new Teams options and a complete Gym revamp.
Mathieu de Fayet, Vice President of Strategic Partnerships at Niantic, has been reported in a recent interview as giving a pretty frank rundown of what is being cooked up right now.

POKEMON GO developer Niantic MUST add these features in 2017 if the app is to continue as a success.

In an interview with Globo, de Fayet explained: “Because of the great success, we had to put off some planned news.
“Now, we are working in announcing new updates for the next summer (Northern hemisphere), like giving more value to the choice of teams, the announcement of the Legendary Pokemon and the battles between the players.
“One thing which we learned with “Ingress” is that the game sustains itself if we are capable to create social interactions between the trainers, and we are working on that.”
The reference to the Northern hemisphere may mean a gradual regional rollout of these new Pokemon Go updates, although this has yet to be confirmed by Niantic.

A big Pokemon Go update is being planned for this summer
A new Pokemon Go update has already been predicted for launch in the coming days, which includes one of the new features referenced by de Fayet.
SlashGear has several theories on what could be included – there is a chance that a big revamp is being planned that could see Trainers having their Pocket Monsters booted from existing Gyms.
“The first possibility is that this update will capture the long-awaited Gym Update and spread it across the planet. If this is true, it’s a good time now to make the most of Gyms held in your local area,” SlashGear reports.

The same big Gym revamp appears to have been listed by de Fayet above, who noted that changes to how players battle each other are coming.
That doesn’t necessarily mean PvP though, in fact, the team at Pokemon Go Hub believe it could mean something completely different.
“We do not believe the phrase “battles between players” has anything to do with PvP,” a message on the PoGo Hub site explains.
“Given the context and the rest of the interview, it’s rather clear that Fayet was referencing the upcoming gym rework and new cooperative gameplay features.”
While this is all exciting news, it should also be noted that this interview has been translated from Portuguese, meaning that there is a chance areas of context may have been lost along the way.
