Kante was key to helping Leicester to the Premier League title last season and earned himself a £32million move to table-toppers Chelsea.

Wenger recently revealed he tried to lure Kante to north London in the summer and also showed an interest before his move to Leicester in 2015.

And Ince reckons the French midfielder is exactly what Wenger needs at Arsenal, who trail Chelsea by 12 points after Saturday's 3-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge.

Ince told Paddy Power: "When I look at Arsenal I see a really good team, one of the best squads in the league, but not one with character. There’s a soft-touch about them.

"Chelsea’s team is full of big characters, big players with desire and the mentality to win – bar Sanchez, Arsenal haven’t got anyone like that. It’s what they’re missing, that presence.

"Wenger said recently he had the chance to buy Kante. So what? There’s no point saying that now. Why didn’t you, then?

Arsenal lost 3-1 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge

"When Arsenal turn it on and play their best football, there is no team in the Premier League that are better to watch.

"But where they really need that mental toughness is in games like their visit to Stamford Bridge last week or the Etihad in December.

"They just don’t show it, and that’s where their problem starts. It’s all good buying top players, but if you aren’t buying players with the right mentality, it’s pointless."
