Padraig Harrington has now been hampered by injury twice this year
Harrington has endured a a tricky year so far having missed four out of six cuts in the US although he finished 31st at last weekend’s Memorial Tournament in Ohio.
He also failed to make the weekend in his only European Tour event of the season – the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth last month.
But he will not even start his next event in Memphis after a freak accident just two days before the first round.
“I was hit on the elbow with a practice swing by an amateur I was coaching at an outing,” Harrington said on Twitter.

“Thankfully nothing was broken, just 6 stitches.”
It is the second serious injury Harrington has suffered in 2017 after having neck surgery in March which limited his ability to compete in the early part of the season.
But the 45-year-old thought the amateur might have inadvertently brought down the curtain on a career which saw him win back-to-back Open Championships as well as capturing the 2008 US PGA Championship.
“I thought it was the end of me playing competitive golf,” Harrington added.

“I’ll only be out for 12 days or so to let stitches heal.”
The recuperation period confirms Harrington’s absence from the US Open as a player although he may yet appear as part of Sky Sports’ coverage of the event.
The Irishman was in Augusta earlier this year during the Masters to add his insight and experience as a pundit, having finished in the top 10 four times at the famous event.
