A new Overwatch update released this week on PTR and how it affects PS4 and Xbox One
Speaking in a new Overwatch update developer video, game director Jeff Kaplan looked to explain how important the PTR is and how it affects PS4 and Xbox One players.
Kaplan confirmed that the PTR was not available on the Microsoft and Sony consoles due to the need of an extra certification process to help maintain no problems are created by adding new content.
That has changed somewhat in recent months, with their being less of a wait for PS4 and Xbox One players to get hold of new content behind the PC platform.
This is due to the PTR, Kaplan explains: “We use the PTR time on PC to help get through that certification process on the consoles.
“That means that we’re not ready to be on the console at the time we’re doing the PTR experience.”
Kaplan did confirm that it doesn’t mean the Overwatch PTR will never be available on consoles, just that at the moment it might be a bridge too far.
“Part of what is enabling us to have simultaneous, or as close to simultaneous releases of our patches as possible, is by using the PTR time on the PC,” Kaplan adds.
Kaplan also confirmed that while Blizzard likes the idea of providing more incentives to playing PTR on PC, the problems of taking away from the core game is currently making this a problem.
"Those ideas, while very cool, would take development time to implement," he says.

"And right now we wrestle with, is the best way to spend our time engineering features for the PTR so players have more incentive [to play on it], or using that same development time and putting it towards the more core features or content of the game that go out to all players?"
On some of the recent changes made in the PTR servers, one of the most felt has been the change to Roadhog, something also discussed this week by Blizzard.
Confirming that there is no ill-will toward those who enjoy hooking other players, Kaplan explained that the mechanic felt glitchy, affecting both victims and hunters.
“We want to address all these issues by making the hook feel more consistent, so it doesn’t feel like you're on Dorado and getting hooked at point 2 on Elios,” he added.
