Der Spiegel's depiction of Donald TrumpDer Spiegel

The controversial cover of Der Spiegel depicting Donald Trump

This week’s issue of left-leaning news weekly Der Spiegel shows a drawing of the newly-elected US leader holding the bleeding head of Lady Liberty in his right hand and a blood-stained knife in the other.

The wording on the image simply reads: “America First”.

The cover would appear to be in reference to Mr Trump’s recent executive order that introduced a temporary travel ban on nationals from certain Muslim countries.

The move, simply referred to as the ‘Muslim ban’, has been highly controversial and sparked a wave of protests both in America and around the world.

Mr Trump’s policy though is currently coming under legal pressure as a federal judge has temporarily halted the order as it “unlawfully” discriminated against Muslims.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has spoken out about the ban with a spokesman saying the move could not be justified.

He said: “The measure does not justify putting people of a specific background or faith under general suspicion.”

Der Spiegel’s cover has caused an uproar on social media with several commentators saying it was “disrespectful” and a “propaganda organ”.

Even Mr Trump has reacted to the cover with a tweet from his personal account, writing: “Very happy to be on cover of @DerSPIEGEL. A very respected newspaper! (unlike FAKE NEWS @CNN!!) German mistrust in US is at all time high!”

Twitter user ‘Raman’ said: “Spiegel was always a propaganda organ.”

“I don't recall Der Spiegel depicting Muslim terrorists this way, when they actually do behead people,” tweeted Ezra Levant.

Right-wing commentator Ben Shapiro said the cover of Trump beheading the Statue of Liberty was “idiotic”.

Others though, such as ‘DrLobo’ called it “Brilliant” and Chris Cillizza called it "stunning".
