Some angry Twitter users even posted “RIP Michael Caine” as they attacked him for saying Brexit had given the people of Britain “freedom”.
One said: “Michael Caine is a senile old c***. It's people like him who've got UK in the mess it is in.”
Another posted: “I said last June that everyone who voted for Brexit was stupid, gullible or racist. Clearly Michael Caine was one of the stupid ones.”

A third Twitter user added: “Easy for Michael Caine to say it's better to be a poor master than a rich servant being a multi millionaire and all.”
Sir Michael, 84, told Sky News: “I voted for Brexit… what it is with me, I’d rather be a poor master than a rich servant.”
His comments sparked outrage, with some even likening Brexit to a famous scene in The Italian Job, in which Sir Michael is filmed in a cliff-hanger ending where a coach teeters over the edge of the cliff.
One tweeted: “Michael Caine's biggest film: A gang of British conmen try to get millions of pounds out of Europe, fail, drive a bus off a cliff instead.

Another added: “It's no surprise Michael Caine is pro-Brexit as he's already associated with a bus that takes everyone to the edge of a precipice.”
This is not the first time the Italian Job has waded into the Brexit debate.

Sir Michael has hit out Brussels before
Ahead of last year’s referendum, Sir Michael hit out at Brussels’ “faceless civil servants”.
He added: “To me, you’ve not got in Europe a sort of government by-proxy of everybody, who has now got carried away.
“Unless there is some extremely significant changes we should get out. You cannot be dictated to by thousands of faceless civil servants.”
