Delving into its unpopularity after it's move from the BBC to Channel 4, and loss of Mary Berry and much-loved hosts Mel Giedroyc, 48, and Sue Perkins, 47, it proved a touchy subject.
Berry later won the award for best judge, and people's hearts melted as she was presented with the title by two of the youngsters from Gogglesprogs.
"So, good evening. We are live on ITV and welcome to the 22nd National Television Awards," said 43-year-old Dermot.
"22 years and we still haven't been bought by Channel 4. Incredible. What are we doing wrong?"

The camera then panned to the 81-year-old former Bake Off judge, but she looked far from impressed.
One viewer tweeted: "Mary Berry didn't look impressed by Dermot's Channel 4 gag, like Dermot on these though."

On later winning her award, one viewer wrote: "Yeeeessssss Mary berry!!! Yeeeessssss!!! In your face channel 4!! #NTAS #GBBO."
