Newcastle were desperate to sign Townsend from Crystal Palace in the January transfer window.

Toon boss Rafa Benitez wanted to bring the England international back to St James' Park just half a year after sanctioning his departure.

However, both clubs failed to come to an agreement – with Palace wanting £13million and a £2m loan fee.

Andros Townsend has had a difficult season at Crystal Palace

Express Sport understands Benitez was infuriated at Newcastle's failure to sign Townsend and threatened to quit his job as a result.

But the Northern Echo claim Benitez is ready to try again in the summer to land his man.

Newcastle will have the funds to acquire the former Tottenham winger permanently should they secure promotion to the Premier League.

Benitez's men are aiming to get out of the Championship at the first time of asking and currently top the table by a point ahead of Brighton.

Should they do so, then a summer return for Townsend looks to be on the cards.
