Newcastle transfer news
Rafa Benitez says there has been no progress in Newcastle’s push to re-sign Andros Townsend from Crystal Palace.
Newcastle are interested in bringing Townsend back to St James’ Park, with Chancel Mbemba supposedly offered as a makeweight in the deal.
But Benitez is struggling to get the deal over the line with Tuesday’s 11pm transfer deadline looming.
“There has not been any progress,” Benitez told The Chronicle when asked if Mbemba was going to be included in a swap deal.
“At the moment, I do not have news one way or the other.”

Benitez went on to discuss the remaining days of the transfer window and admits he is working hard to secure deals before the deadline.
Newcastle play QPR on Wednesday night, meaning they have all day tomorrow to work on moves.
“I don’t think it will change too much in terms of the transfer window,” Benitez said.
“We have to do our job before [the deadline] – one extra day shouldn’t make too much of a difference.
“We have our targets, but we don’t know if we can get them.
“The timing does not change anything.”

Leeds United and Sunderland both in the running to sign Newcastle target Mo Barrow, according to reports.
Newcastle are said to be considering a swoop for Swansea winger Barrow before tomorrow’s transfer deadline.
The Sun claim Swansea value their Gambia international at £7million.
Leeds have not spent that much money on a player since bringing Robbie Fowler to the club from Liverpool in an £11m deal back in 2001.
Leeds manager Garry Monk yesterday expressed his frustration over their struggles to sign players this month.
Sunderland boss David Moyes, meanwhile, is determined to sign off on new players and is also keen to land Everton full-back Bryan Oviedo as a replacement for Patrick van Aanholt.
Newcastle are said to be frontrunners to land Barrow, 24, who will be free to leave Swansea if the south Wales club land Benfica’s Argentinian defender Lisandro Lopez.
Aston Villa and Southampton have all been linked with Barrow in recent days.
