Brady pulled the New England Patriots from the brink to help them land their fifth title and leave the Atlanta Falcons broken.

In the process he became the first quarterback to claim five winners' rings while head coach Bill Belichick became the most successful boss of all time.

The Falcons had charged into a seemingly unassailable 28-3 lead midway through the third quarter and the game looked over.

But ice-cool Brady proved what a colossal champion he is by throwing for a Super Bowl record 466 yards before James White charged into the end-zone for the winning touchdown after the game had gone into overtime for the first time ever.

The amazing triumph will go down as one of the most incredible fightback in any sport and cemented Brady's place in NFL folklore.

But when half time arrived Brady and his bunch were in serious danger of getting thrashed and looking like chumps instead of champs.

The Falcons, superbly led by quarterback Matt Ryan, stormed into a 21-3 half time lead thanks to three touchdowns in an incredible second quarter.

It left the Patriots with a mountain to climb considering the largest deficit ever overturned in a Super Bowl had been 10 points.

It was a challenge even the remarkable Brady, playing in his seventh final, would struggle to pull off.

Brady, 39, had started the night by running over to his fans before kick-off and screaming at them to get vocal.

But the fact was he couldn't give them anything to shout about as the Patriots were blitzed.

The score remained blank in a tight first quarter but the game burst into life in the second as the Falcons' stunning offence took charge.

Devonta Freeman opened his side's account with a cruise into the end zone from close range to complete a 71 yard drive after Patriots running back LeGarrette Blount had provided a turnover.

The Falcons then made it a two score lead when Ryan picked out rookie tight end Austin Hooper with a laser like pass to make it 14-0.

Things went from bad to worse for Brady when he saw his pass picked off by cornerback Robert Alford.

With open field ahead of him, Alford charged 77 yards unopposed and even had time to taunt his rivals before crossing for the third touchdown of the night.

New England Patriots enjoyed an incredible win

It was going down as one of the worst halves of Brady's glittering career and all the Patriots had to show for the dismal efforts was a field goal from Stephen Gostkowski.

Bilichick's mantra has always been 'do your job' and it has served him quite well to be fair throughout a glorious coaching career.

But the problem was most of his Patriots were not doing their jobs – including star man Brady.

The Falcons took the liberty of extending their lead even further in the third quarter when Ryan found Tevin Coleman out wide and he strolled into the end zone to become the fourth different scorer and make it 28-3.

But like proven champions do, Brady refused to give up and hit running back White with a neat touchdown pass to reduce the arrears.

Stephen Gostkowski missed the extra point but kicked a field goal and moments later Brady found Danny Amendola for another touchdown.

When the Patriots claimed a two-point conversion the Falcons' lead had been slashed to just eight points with five minutes to go.

White then barged over for his second touchdown and once again the Patriots secured another two point conversion to make it 28-28 and take the clash into overtime.

From here on there was just one winner. It was written in the stars. The Patriots won the toss, got the ball and Brady led his side down the field to set-up the chance for White to complete his hat-trick and the most remarkable win ever.
