The blaze on the track between New Cross and St Johns stations in south-east London happened shortly before 9am on Tuesday.
A number of Southeastern services to and from London Cannon Street were affected.
One commuter tweeted: "My train is stopped quite far from the fire at New Cross station, but we can smell the smoke! #NewCross."
Another said: "Stuck on train outside New Cross thanks to trackside fire – but driver on 9:10 from LEW to CST is brilliant. Thanks for all info."
A number of Southeastern services to and from London Cannon Street were affected
London Fire Brigade (LFB) sent three fire engines and 15 firefighters to the scene.
Southeastern tweeted: "@LondonFire are on site at #NewCross along with @networkrail dealing with a Track Fire."
Commuters posted about the disruption on Twitter
The company later confirmed: "The Fire is out at #NewCross and the line will open very soon. Sorry for delay."
The fire was brought under control by 9.44am.
